The Camera Obscura underwent its most recent condition survey in March 2025, Education Minister Daphne Caine MHK has confirmed in a written Tynwald answer.
Surveys were also carried out in 2018 and 2020, with works completed at the time.
Minister Caine said the attraction’s exposed coastal location and seasonal operation mean it requires regular inspections and ongoing maintenance, with DESC and the Department of Infrastructure officers making routine visits to monitor repairs, test security systems and update volunteers.

The 2025 survey found further deterioration in sections of the sailcloth roofing installed during a 2005 restoration.
Despite extensive repairs in 2017-18, other areas of the sailcloth have since failed, causing damage to parts of the sub‑structure.
Nails used to fix decorative timber cladding from the same restoration were also showing signs of decay due to salt‑air exposure. Remedial roof repairs were carried out in March 2025.
However, additional issues have since emerged. The DoI is now engaging a contractor to address outstanding work, including:
- Replacement of wooden joists and decking – required after deterioration identified post‑survey;
- Removal and replacement of corroded steelwork and fastenings- affecting structural components beneath the decking.
