The unmistakable sound of one of motorcycling’s most legendary engines will echo around the Mountain Course again this summer as Mick Grant brings a replica of Honda’s revolutionary RC174 Six to the Classic TT.
The faithful recreation of Honda’s RC174 Six, the 297cc variant that dominated the 350cc class in the 1960s, will be paraded ahead of the Senior Classic TT on Friday August 29.
The original machine was piloted by Mike Hailwood to victory in the 1967 Junior TT, where he set an outright lap record of 107.73mph from a standing start.
Speaking on The TT Podcast, Grant expressed his admiration for the bike, calling it “a marvel of rapid development” and recalling Honda’s fierce rivalry with Yamaha in the 1960s Grand Prix battles.
The RC174’s predecessor, the 250cc RC166, first triumphed at the TT in 1965 with Jim Redman, before Hailwood secured back-to-back Lightweight wins in 1966 and 1967. The enlarged six-cylinder RC174, with its distinctive howling engine, became an icon of the era.
Grant’s demonstration lap will offer fans a rare chance to witness this legendary machine back on the Mountain Course, ridden by one of the TT’s most respected names..
