The publication of a new 10-year waste strategy has been delayed after the infrastructure minister ordered a fresh round of consultation with local authorities.
Tim Crookall told a Tynwald committee that the strategy, due to be laid before December, had not been moved because newly elected local authority members said they had not seen the document.
“Some of the local authorities, obviously there was an election last year, and a lot of them were new. They weren’t aware of it, or hadn’t seen the document,” Mr Crookall said.
A previous consultation took place around 18 months ago. The minister said the re-consultation had been “more of an education process” and that he did not expect significant changes to the strategy.
Waste
Jeffrey Robinson, Deputy Chief Officer at the Department of Infrastructure, confirmed the strategy aims to be comprehensive across all waste types and has been developed “hand in glove with DEFA”.
The minister said he hoped to bring the strategy before Tynwald before July 2026.
“I would like to think we can be back before July this year,” he said.
The principles of the strategy were supported by 663 public responses during an earlier consultation.
