Port St Mary RNLI launched its lifeboat after a local fishing vessel suffered mechanical failure south west of the Calf of Man.
The Henry Heys Duckworth launched at 1.39pm yesterday (June 23) with eight volunteer crew after HM Coastguard requested assistance to the drifting vessel, located around nine miles offshore.
The lifeboat arrived on scene at 2.46pm to find two people on board, both safe, wearing lifejackets, but unable to manoeuvre after losing propulsion.
As the vessel drifted, fishing gear had become fouled beneath the hull, leaving it a potential hazard to other traffic. The crew established a tow, and as the vessel began moving, the tangled gear freed itself and was recovered.
The tow continued without issue, and the vessel was brought safely into Port St Mary Harbour at 5.30pm. The lifeboat was refuelled and ready for service again by 6pm.
Lifeboat Operations Manager Mike Teare said: “Even on calm days, engine problems can quickly leave you drifting and unable to manoeuvre.
“We’d always encourage boat users to carry a reliable means of calling for help, wear appropriate safety equipment, let someone know your plans before heading out, and make sure your engine and equipment are well maintained.”
