With the new school term beginning, the Police are urging motorists to exercise greater caution on roads around the island’s schools.
The end of half-term coincides with darker mornings and evenings following the clock change. Police are asking the public to ensure children are visible while walking or using school buses.
In a post, the Constabulary provided key reminders, urging drivers to stick to speed limits, avoid parking on pavements or zig-zag lines and never to let children exit a car on the roadside.
They also emphasised the mandatory and enforceable nature of the 20mph limits in school zones when signs are illuminated.
Proactive
The Police added: “We’ll also be carrying out educational and proactive parking enforcement to help improve safety around schools.”
A direct appeal was made to parents and motorists asking them to “not put a child in danger by rushing to get yours to school or yourself to work”.
It added: “Whilst you may want to keep your child safe getting into school often where you choose to park or drop off causes danger for other children and road users.
“Taking a little more time and care helps keep our Island and our children safe.”
