Single Speaker For Tynwald?

A proposal to replace the Speaker and President of Tynwald with a single presiding officer will be debated in Tynwald this month.

Onchan MHK Julie Edge has tabled a motion calling for one officer to cover all three chambers.

The move would mark a significant shift from the current system, which sees separate individuals serve as President of Tynwald and Speaker of the House of Keys.

Ms Edge’s motion would also impose a two-consecutive-term limit on presidents and speakers, with a five-year bar on any return to the same office.

The July sitting is the last full session before the 2026 General Election, where members will pick a new President.

Ms Edge is also seeking a restructuring of member remuneration “to better reflect current responsibilities including membership of government departments”, without it costing taxpayers more.

Members stopped being paid for departmental membership after a committee recommendation in the last administration. The current base pay for an MHK is £81,312 with MLCs getting £76,761.

Tynwald is asked to instruct the Standing Orders Committee to consider and report on the legislation and Standing Orders needed to deliver the reforms.
