Sir Mark Cavendish says the Tour de France is likely to be the last race of his legendary career.
The Manx Missile, who this claimed a record breaking 35th Le Tour win, delayed his retirement last year for last shot at breaking the record he held with Belgian Eddy Merckx.
Cycling’s greatest ever sprinter, a knight of the realm, Sir Cav, 39, has twice won the green points classification jersey, in 2011 and his remarkable 2021 success.
Asked if this year’s race was his last, Sir Cav said “likely so, yes”.
He told ITV4: “I’ve been very lucky to have the career that I’ve had.”
And added: “My family was here waiting at the end for me, it was nice to see them while crossing the line with no pressure and just able to enjoy it.”
His career has also seen him win Commonwealth Gold, Olympic Silver, 17 Giro d’Italia stages and one world road championship.
