Figures released by the Department for Enterprise show a notable decline in occupancy rates for serviced accommodation in 2024 compared to previous years.
The data, provided by Minister for Enterprise Tim Johnston in response to a question from Onchan MHK Rob Callister, reveals trends across hotels, guest houses, bed and breakfasts, and self-catering properties.
In March 2024, the island had 17 hotels, 29 guest houses, 41 bed and breakfasts and 454 self-catering units registered.
Occupancy rates for serviced accommodation, including hotels and B&Bs, dropped to 62% and 60% in July and August last year, down from 87% and 83% the year before.
Meanwhile, self-catering properties remained more stable, with rates reaching 82% in August of both the last years.
Mr Johnston cautioned that the findings “should be interpreted with caution as they may not fully reflect broader trends across the sector,” due to the voluntary nature of the survey and small sample sizes.
Participation rates varied, with just 7% of serviced providers responding in September 2024.
The figures highlight a seasonal pattern, with summer months performing strongest. However, the 2024 decline in serviced stays contrasts with the resilience of self-catering options.
