Storm Damage and Erosion Force Path Closure

The beach access path from Sartfield Road in Jurby has been closed amid safety concerns.

An initial emergency closure order is currently in place until November 30 – but it may be extended.

A Department of Infrastructure spokesperson explained: “The recent Storms Austen and Boelo have caused significant coastal erosion at this location.

“Wave action has bypassed the rock armour protecting the base of the access steps, undermining the cliff face behind them and causing substantial washout. As a result, the route is now unsafe for public use.”

They added: “Previous storms destroyed the lower timber steps at this site.

“These were recently replaced with steel steps, which have remained structurally intact. However, the ground and cliff behind the steps have been severely eroded, creating an unacceptable safety risk.”

Structural engineers from the department will assess the extent of the damage and consider the options for restoring access.

Similar storm damage has also occurred at Balleira, Michael, where coastal erosion has affected the slipway to the beach.
