Tributes Paid to Former MHK

Tributes have been paid to former MHK and minster Tim Baker after his death this week.

Mr Baker represented Ayre and Michael from 2016 to 2021 and also served in a number of roles.

As well as DoI Minister, he served as chair of Manx Utilities and chair of Isle of Man Meats.

Mr Baker was also fundamental in bringing the Knottfield abuse scandal to public awareness after his Tynwald motion in 2017 not only led to a formal apology from the government, but Joseph Marshal’s conviction in 2022.

Away from politics he was a keen sportsman and dedicated family man with a long record in business.

Saddened

Paying tribute to Mr Baker, Onchan MHK Rob Callister said: “I am profoundly saddened to learn of the passing of my dear friend and colleague, Tim Baker, yesterday.

“In recent weeks, I have had the privilege of staying in touch with Tim’s wife, Vivienne, and I am truly grateful for the moments I spent with Tim during his time in the hospital recently.

“Tim was not only a cherished member of the Tynwald family from 2016 to 2021; he embodied warmth, generosity, and good humor, leaving an indelible mark on all of us.

“His tireless dedication, thoughtful encouragement, and shared laughter during our busiest days showcased his remarkable ability to connect with those around him.

“On a personal note, I will always treasure the collaboration between Tim, Kerry, and myself on the Select Committee on Accommodation for Vulnerable Young People on the island.

“His dedication and insights were invaluable, and he will be deeply missed.”
