UCM Lecturer Brings Fresh Academic Lens to TT

UCM has highlighted new academic research into the Isle of Man TT by adult learning lecturer Tony Cain, whose work explores the races through philosophical and cultural themes.

Cain, who grew up on the island, spent 18 months as a PhD researcher with the University of Gloucestershire, examining why riders and fans remain drawn to the event.

His study looks at ideas of meaning, identity and value, touching on concepts such as freedom, courage, struggle and excellence.

He described the TT as “a unique existential event” that offers insight into human motivation.

The research builds on earlier work into TT memorabilia and community, and will feed directly into a new adult learning course at UCM. Cain said his connection to the races began in childhood and now informs his academic approach.

Tony’s course, entitled ‘Meaning, Value and Risk at the Isle of Man TT Races’ will run on November 3 and can be book on the UCM website.
