The Isle of Man Trades Union Congress has hit back at government characterisations of the impending bus strike, insisting the action is the direct result of unresolved pay talks.
In a statement, the IOMTUC noted the government’s comments regarding the planned industrial action by Bus Vannin drivers.
“This action follows a lawful ballot and a clear mandate from drivers. It is not ‘inevitable’ — it is the result of unresolved issues around pay and conditions,” the union said.
The response follows a government appeal for PSV licence holders to help maintain services during the walkout.
Assurances
However, the IOMTUC has raised significant concerns about the safety implications of such contingency plans.
“Operating public bus services requires more than a licence — safeguarding, DBS clearance, CPC compliance and operator training must all be in place,” the statement continued.
“Passengers are entitled to assurance that any contingency arrangements meet the same standards as the permanent workforce.”
The union also challenged the pace at which the government has mobilised alternative arrangements.
“If government can mobilise contingency plans quickly, it can mobilise a credible offer to resolve this dispute,” it said.
