Washington to Seek Douglas North Seat

Peter Washington has announced he will stand as a candidate for Douglas North in this September’s House of Keys election.

The Douglas Councillor and Manx Labour Party Secretary has lived on the island for almost 30 years, having originally moved from the UK with his family.

Mr Washington spent 21 years working as a paramedic in the UK before taking on roles supporting adults with physical and learning disabilities at the Eastcliffe and Eric day centres.

Mr Washington said: “Public service has always been at the heart of my life. I spent 21 years working as a paramedic in the UK, before moving to the Isle of Man almost 30 years ago with my growing family.

“It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with this Island and its people, who I believe make the Isle of Man such a special place to call home.”

Since moving to the island, Mr Washington has served as Mechanic and later Lifeboat Operations Manager for Douglas RNLI.

He has also campaigned on fairness issues as a trade union activist and helped present a Petition of Doleance to Tynwald calling for improvements to support children with dyslexia.

That campaign resulted in 11 of 12 recommendations from a subsequent Select Committee being adopted.

Elected as a Councillor for Douglas North in 2021, Mr Washington now serves as Chair of the Housing Committee.

“I’m proud to announce that I will be standing as a candidate for Douglas North in this September’s House of Keys election,” he said.

“If I am elected as your MHK, I will continue to be a strong voice for Douglas North. I will work hard to stand up for fairness, improve housing, protect tenants’ rights, and make sure the voices of local people are heard.”

John Wannenburgh and Hugo Yates have previously announced their intention to contest the election.
