Writer Visits Foxdale for Book Research

Foxdale Heritage Centre has welcomed a writer from England who is writing about the history of the village’s mines.

Henry Timperley, from Horsham in West Sussex, visited the Heritage Centre this week and spent several days on the island carrying out research.

His interest in the industrial heritage of the Isle of Man began more than 40 years and he started some of his work on Foxdale back in 2011 with help from Stan Basnett.

Foxdale Heritage said: “Over the past year he has been able to devote a lot more time to this project and his visit this week has enabled him to access a substantial amount of original source material with help from staff at the Manx Museum archives.

“Today at the Heritage Centre he found additional information amongst our collection of photographs and documents relating to the Foxdale Mines and he was particularly interested in the archive material we have concerning several generations of the Kitto family from William Kitto Senior onwards (these were donated to us by descendants of the Kitto/Moore families).

“Henry will be keeping in touch with us and we look forward to the publication of a book that may become the definitive history of the Foxdale mining era.”
