Culture Vannin is looking for its next ‘Reih Bleeaney Vanannan’, Manannan’s Choice of the Year.
The award recognises Manannan as a patron for Manx culture and is a celebration of our cultural community.
Anyone can make a nomination for an individual or a group of people, and November is the time to do it.
Nomination Process
The process couldn’t be easier – there’s a simple form to fill in, and all you have to do is write about someone should be recognised, whether they’ve achieved something incredible for Manx culture recently, or have made a lasting contribution.
There’s an emphasis on what people have done in their own time rather than as paid employment – there’s a set of rules and short guidance notes on the downloadable form.
Last year, the award was made to Annie Kissack, whose contribution to Manx language, music, song, folklore and poetry was honoured.
Manx Cultural Hero
Director of Culture Vannin, Dr Breesha Maddrell, hopes that people will again be encouraged to make a nomination: “The award is a really positive recognition of Manx culture to our sense of identity here, and it’s a way of thanking a group or an individual for what they have done to make the Isle of Man a richer place culturally.”
The award covers the broad sweep of Manx culture, represented by previous winners who include Nigel Crowe (genealogy, land division, history), Fiona McArdle (Manx language, music, and history), the Michael Players (dialect theatre), William Cain (wildlife and environment), Clare Kilgallon (music, song and dance), the Bunscoill Ghaelgagh (language and culture), and Maureen Costain Richards (Manx artistic heritage).
Nominations from the public are reviewed by a group of judges from various Manx cultural organisations, with the winner usually announced in January.
