Be Wary of Benefit Scammers

Dr Alex Allinson MHK

Residents are being warned to remain alert to potential scams exploiting the ongoing changes to benefit payments.

The warning comes amid concerns that fraudsters may use the situation to target vulnerable individuals.

Treasury Minister Dr Alex Allinson told Tynwald: “I do not want from this debate for people to start getting phone calls from people trying to scam them.”

He emphasised the official procedures for handling personal data, adding: “If anyone gets a phone call from somebody proposing to be from Social Security or the banks about my card, can you please give me your bank account details?

“That is not coming from government. We do not work like that.”

Hang Up

Official bodies like Social Security and banks will never make unsolicited calls to request bank account details.

Anyone receiving such a call is advised to hang up immediately.

Islanders who have concerns or need to discuss their benefit payment method are encouraged to contact the Social Security division directly through its official channels.

Do not engage with cold callers or provide any personal information.
