The DoI has submitted a planning application for a major flood defence and highway scheme along West and East Quay in Ramsey.
The proposals aim to protect the harbour-side area from increasing tidal flooding and, if approved, construction is expected to take between 18 and 24 months to complete.
Key to the plan is a new 1.3-metre-high concrete flood wall, stretching from Bowring Road to Neptune Street.
The scheme includes the resurfacing, improved lighting and new pedestrian crossings. However, it will result in the loss of 52 on-street parking spaces along the quay.
A previous plan was withdrawn after residents and Ramsey Commissioners criticised the loss of parking, amongst other parts of the scheme.
A planning statement supporting the application acknowledges the impact, but argues the benefits outweigh the costs.
It says the wall is designed to “significantly reduce tidal flood risk for up to 542 residential properties under future climate scenarios”.
However, it also notes the works “could increase flood risk slightly at Shipyard Road and in Parliament Square”.
