The Department of Infrastructure has begun a renewed effort to address derelict and abandoned vessels in Manx harbours.
It is working directly with boat owners to identify at‑risk craft earlier and reduce the need for formal enforcement.
The campaign aims to keep harbours safe, clean and well‑managed by engaging with owners before vessels fall into serious disrepair.
Over the past three years the DoI has removed and disposed of a growing number of derelict boats: 28 in 2025, 30 in 2024 and 11 in 2023.
Derelict Boats
The DoI say only a small number of vessels become hazardous, but those that do can pose risks including sinking, obstruction and potential pollution.
It stressed that a scruffy appearance does not necessarily mean a boat is unsafe.
The new approach focuses on early conversations with owners, helping them repair or remove vessels before they become a problem.
The Department says this reduces costs for both owners and government, avoids lengthy bureaucratic procedures and allows multiple disposals to be organised together for better‑value waste contracts.
Earlier engagement has also led to a significant reduction in unpaid harbour dues.
Boat Registration
The island’s national boat registration system allows the Department to trace owners quickly, an advantage not available in the UK, speeding up communication and reducing enforcement complications.
Priority attention is being given to vessels showing signs of disrepair, boats at risk of sinking and those that could cause pollution or navigation hazards.
Where removal is unavoidable, action will be taken under the Harbours Act 2010, with all disposals carried out in line with DEFA environmental guidelines.
Deputy Harbour Master Gary Lewin said the focus is on cooperation rather than enforcement:
“Our first approach is always to talk. Most issues can be resolved by working with owners early, long before a boat becomes a hazard. This campaign is about being proactive, avoiding unnecessary costs, and ensuring our harbours remain safe and attractive places for everyone who uses them.”
