Castletown Commissioners say the arguments from ex politicians about pedestrianisation of the town square “appear to reflect an outdated perspective”.
Former chief minister Tony Brown, minister Richard Ronan and commissioners chair John Cringle have widely criticised the plans.
Responding, the authority said it “respectfully” disagrees with their views which they say “prioritises vehicular access over a broader vision for a vibrant and accessible town”.
It added: “It is disappointing that one of the lead petitioners, as a former Chairman of the Commissioners, has chosen not to disclose their longstanding personal interest in parking availability in the immediate vicinity of Market Square.
“Transparency is essential to ensure that discussions about Castletown’s future are conducted in good faith.”

The Commissioners also thanked the DoI for sharing the petition submitted by 140+ residents and visitors in support of the decision to keep Market Square closed to vehicular traffic.
It said: “This feedback underscores the importance of creating a pedestrian-friendly town centre that prioritises safety, accessibility, and long-term sustainability over short-term convenience.
“It is a matter of public record that the Commissioners have consistently acknowledged the potential need for parking during the winter months or for special events. However, the Board believes such arrangements should be considered on a case-by-case basis rather than established as default policy.
“In the summer of 2023, the Department advised that an order reflecting this flexibility could not be accurately implemented, leading to the subsequent motion by Mrs Cannan.
“If the Department’s position has since evolved, the Commissioners would welcome the opportunity to revisit this suggestion in collaboration with the relevant authorities.”
Balancing
The Commissioners went on to say its board is “committed to balancing the needs of residents, businesses, and visitors while fostering a town centre that is both functional and welcoming” and claimed that the pedestrianisation of Market Square has “already enhanced the town’s charm and appeal, creating opportunities for events, social gatherings, and a more relaxed retail environment”.
It added: “We encourage all stakeholders to work together constructively, setting aside personal interests and embracing a forward-thinking vision for Castletown. The Commissioners remain open to dialogue and collaboration as we continue to support both our local businesses and the wider community.
“We also extend our thanks to the Minister for clarifying her position following an extensive submission period. We keenly await formal correspondence so that we may provide an informed response and do not intend to make any further comment until this has been received.
“The Market Square will remain closed to vehicular traffic over the festive period, and we hope the community will make the most of this space.
“We look forward to the Castletown Metropolitan Silver Band Carol Service on Christmas Eve at 2pm and the annual Boxing Day Hunt.”
