Increase in Govt Top Earners

Isle of Man Government Office, Douglas

The number of government workers being paid over £400,000 more than doubled in the last financial year.

Government has released its annual financial report for the year ending March 31, 2024.

The report shows that the number of top earners, those paid over £500,000 a year doubled from one to two while the number being paid between £400,000 and £424,999 rose from one to four.

Outlining the total number of civil servants being paid over £50,000 a year, the report includes gross pay amounts as remuneration, but excludes employers’ contributions (for example, employers’ pension contributions), settlement payments and compromise agreements.

It says: “The figures are based on the total remuneration for an individual employee regardless of how many posts that individual may have held. For example, where an individual was employed by two different departments for two different tasks, the employee is classified above based on their amalgamated remuneration for both posts.”

The increased salaries, especially in higher brackets, likely reflect inflationary pressures and comes in the year where departments like Health and Social Care and Education reported budget strains partially due to pay awards, with negotiated increases ranging from 6% to 7%.

That is perhaps best reflected in the £50,000 to £74,999 band where recorded a considerable increase from 1,662 to 2,115 staff.

The Group figures do not include amounts for the Isle of Man Steam Packet Group, Radio Manx Limited, Isle of Man Meat Company Limited, Laxey Glen Mills Limited and Manx Development Corporation Limited as the companies are not required to comply.
