The DoI has confirmed an investigation is underway after the Manxman ran aground in Douglas Harbour earlier this month.
Manxman ran aground on March 1 due to high mud levels, remaining stuck for over an hour.
The investigation, commissioned by the Director of Harbours, will examine when and how the mud buildup was first identified, who was aware, and what plans were proposed.
In response to a question from Douglas Central MHK Chis Thomas, Minister Dr Michelle Haywood said: “Once this investigation has concluded, the findings will be released which will provide answers to the questions posed.”
Dredging
Meanwhile, dredging work has been carried out to address the issue.
The Department contracted Boskalis, a specialist dredging company, which deployed the plough dredge vessel Norma II for a four-day operation.
However, while successful in most areas, the vessel could not fully clear mud near No. 5 berth (the Manxman’s usual berth) due to its size and seabed slope.
Dr Haywood explained: “Further regrading in front of the No. 5 berth is required, and Boskalis is in the process of providing a solution.”
Once completed, the Harbours Division will tender for a five-year survey programme covering Douglas Harbour and other ports.
