MHK: Govt Account Not Same as Constituents

Sarah Maltby MHK

Douglas South MHK Sarah Maltby has refuted the government’s stance that there is no evidence people staying in Liverpool for treatment are being disproportionately impaired by a new tourist tax.

Mrs Maltby had asked her constituency colleague DHSC Minister Clare Christian about the impact the City Visitor Charge was having on patients and their families.

Ms Christian said there was “no clear evidence” of disproportionate impact from the £2 per night CVC, which was introduced in June.

However, Mrs Maltby said: “Manx Care do not believe that this additional charge means Manx patients are ‘disproportionately impacted’ or that this creates a ‘barriers’ for patients and their escorts.

“I do not agree with this claim and neither do the constituents who have contacted me to complain about this.”

She also pointed out that the current allowance of £50 a night is often not enough to meet costs faced by families and asked people affected to contact dhsc@gov.im.
