MHKs to Pay for Parking From Next Month

Tynwald members will likely start paying for parking again from next month.

Having been reviewed and approved by CoMin, the policy is now undergoing administrative implementation.

DoI Minister Dr Michelle Haywood said: “It’s my expectation that Tynwald members will be paying for their parking, if they opt to do so, from next month and at commercial rates.”

Julie Edge (Onchan) raised concerns about fairness and asked whether some civil servants should be paying too.

She said: “Whilst I don’t disagree with parking charges for Tynwald members, I do feel that I want to see the policy and has it been revised?

“There’s a large number of employees on similar grades with throughout government that perhaps should be looking at making having charges as well, so that we’re supporting the people that are on the lower grades more so and people that are above a certain grade. I’m not sure which grade we’re affiliated to now, but should everybody be paying parking fees?

Dr Haywood said that it’s very difficult to equate people’s grades and jobs to whether they should be paying for parking” adding that as some areas, particularly those outside Douglas get free parking, “it would be unfair to impose something based on the job grade.”
