Education Minister Daphne Caine MHK has outlined the range of support available to young musicians across island schools.
In response to a written question from Kate Lord Brennan MHK, Minister Caine said the Music Service is currently providing specialist instrumental tuition to 868 learners in primary and secondary schools and at UCM.
Lessons run for 25 minutes, delivered either in small groups or individually for advanced students, with a minimum of 30 sessions a year.
A further 353 children have taken part in the Equal Music programme, which replaced Soundstart.
Music Lessons
The Minister confirmed the Service has sufficient instrument stock, carries out repairs, and offers free tuition and instrument hire for learners on free school meals and for GCSE and A‑level Music students.
Standard fees are £37 per term for group lessons and £55 for individual tuition, with hire at £21 per term.
Ensemble opportunities include the Manx Youth Orchestra (133 members), the Manx Youth Guitar Ensemble, and the Manx Children’s Choir, all of which perform regularly. Staff also support school concerts and run extra‑curricular music clubs.
Most lessons take place in schools, with additional teaching and exam space at the Music Centre at St Ninian’s Lower School.
