New Plans Submitted for North Quay

A long-awaited redevelopment plan for part of Douglas’ North Quay has been submitted with significant revisions, namely excluding the former Newsons buildings.

The application by Kelman Ltd proposes the demolition and replacement of numbers 22/23 and 25/26 North Quay with two modern mixed-use buildings, incorporating restaurants, bars, and eight apartments.

Number 24, known as Merchant’s House, will be retained.

However, the registered buildings at 27 and 28 North Quay—commonly referred to as the Newson’s Trading Building—remain outside the scheme.

Previous plans which included the Newsons building were abandoned due to planners refusing permission for the registered building, which is in a sorry state, to be replaced.

In this application, the company said: “The future of the registered buildings remains uncertain due to their poor condition and as yet, without a safe method of retention and conversion.”

However, it does say it wants to find a “robust, safe and commercially viable solution”.
