The DoI has reiterated its message that its flood maps are not licensed for commercial decision-making or insurance purposes for this reason.
Flood maps produced by the DoI are designed to provide an “indicative broad-scale assessment of areas at risk of flooding across the island”.
It says its maps are not sufficiently detailed to determine individual property flood risk as they do not take into consideration localised details (for example property threshold levels) or drainage networks.
The DoI says it “has no control over the methods insurance providers use to assess risk”.
The department added: “Insurance providers determine flood risk in different ways, depending on the provider.”
It suggests that house owners and prospective purchasers should evaluate the characteristics of their property to understand specific risks using other sources of information.
