Speed limit signs may be affixed to lamp posts, Infrastructure Minister has confirmed.
Dr Michelle Haywood gave the answer in response to Douglas Central MHK Chris Thomas, who asked whether such signs could be installed in both the island and England.
This follows some controversy over new poles being installed in Onchan which led to Dr Haywood apologising for any confusion over the issue.
This week Dr Haywood said: “Speed-limit signs may be affixed to street-lighting columns on the Isle of Man.
“Street lighting is the responsibility of local authorities, not the Department of Infrastructure. Therefore, the department must obtain approval from the relevant local authority before attaching signs to lighting columns.”
She added that coordination with local authorities would be essential for projects such as the 20mph rollout in Douglas and Onchan: “Where signs are required on lighting columns—as may be required for the rollout phases for the 20mph project in Douglas and Onchan—this will be coordinated with Douglas City Council and Onchan District Commissioners, respectively.”
Speed limits signs can be attached to lamp poles in the UK, but do not require further permission from local authorities.
