Tribute Paid to Former Commissioner Nigel

Garff Commissioners has paid tribute to Nigel Dobson following his sad death.

A businessman and former commissioner, Mr Dobson played several roles in the island’s community, including with the Onchan branch of the Rotary Club.

The authority praised its former chair, a board member for almost 15 years, for his “dedicated” work to benefit the district.

It said: “Nigel’s desire to serve the residents of Lonan and Garff was paramount in his activities with the Commissioners and the other organisations such as the Rotary Club and the Laxey and Lonan Heritage Trust.

“Nigel was particularly instrumental in the negotiations and implementation of the amalgamation of Laxey, Lonan, and Maughold into Garff Commissioners in 2016.

“He went on to play a leading role in the formative years of the Authority serving as Chair several times during his time on the Board. Nigel also served on various joint boards and committees and demonstrated a great commitment to serving the community of Lonan and Garff.”

Mr Dobson also ran several successful businesses at the former Liverpool Arms and held franchises eateries such as the Sound Café, the Manx Museum, and the Niarbyl restaurant.

Garff Commissioners added: “Nigel was popular and highly respected by colleagues on the Boards he served as well as by the Authority’s staff. His experience and guidance being very much missed when he stood down in 2021.

“The Board of Garff Commissioners, past and present Members and staff, extend their heartfelt condolences to Nigel’s wife, Marilyn, his two sons, and his wider family during this difficult time.

“Nigel’s contributions and legacy will be remembered with great respect and gratitude by his fellow Commissioners and all staff at 35 New Road and Cooil Roi.”
