What Has It Cost Us?

Taxpayers may finally learn exactly how much of our money was spent on the government’s ferry terminal in Liverpool.

Originally budgeted at around £38m, costs spiralled on the project and were said to have at almost doubled to £70m.

On Tuesday Jason Moorhouse will ask the Chief Minister what the final cost is.

In March Alf Cannan told ITV Granada that he expected Treasury Minister Dr Alex Allinson to come to Tynwald with the final figure, but gave no firm date on when he expected that to be.

Former DoI minister Tim Crookall previously said the price wouldn’t be known until 65 weeks after completion, the terminal having opened in June last year.

A Success

During a debate on the DoI’s annual plan last year members used the opportunity to attack the white elephant on the Mersey, with minister Dr Michelle Haywood describing it as a “success”.

Dr Haywood said: “With regards to the Liverpool ferry terminal, I think we can define it that it’s a success.

“It’s well thought of by its passengers that pass through there. It allows that Liverpool route now at weekends, to use the Manxman, which is a vessel with much higher capacity than the Manannan can manage and that is proving to be a really, really popular route.”

Tynwald sits at 10am on Tuesday.
