Joney Faragher will today ask whether the Isle of Man will seek an exemption from controversial UK plans to extend Indefinite Leave to Remain rules.
The UK Government has announced it intends to increase the qualifying period for settlement from five years to ten years, with the changes applied retrospectively.
Ms Faragher will press Treasury Minister Chris Thomas on whether a carve-out or separate arrangement is being pursued for the island.
“It is about fairness, certainty and keeping faith with people who made major life decisions based on the rules that existed at the time,” the Douglas South MHK said.
The changes mean some individuals already approaching the five-year threshold could face many more years of uncertainty.
“Many of those potentially affected are people who contribute enormously to our Island every single day: workers in healthcare, education, care services and other vital sectors,” Ms Faragher said.
“I don’t believe it’s right to move the goalposts retrospectively for people who followed the rules they were given.”
The island maintains its own immigration system but is closely tied to UK policy. Ms Faragher confirmed she would ask whether existing residents can be protected or a distinct Manx approach is possible.
“Whatever views people may hold on wider immigration policy, I hope we can agree that fairness, honesty and stability matter, especially for people who have already committed themselves to life on our island,” she added.
