A proposed offshore wind farm could devastate an area of “great spiritual significance” that includes a Neolithic burial ground dating back some 5,000 years, a public hearing has heard.
Maughold resident Pam Kerruish told the examining body that the turbines would be sited near Ballafayle Cairn, a Neolithic burial ground.
She explained that it is “the northernmost of three similar sites, one being Cashtal yn Ard, which is very well known and it is in line of sight of Ballafayle Cairn.”
Ms Kerruish described the deep historical and spiritual resonance of the area. She said: “We believe that these sites have great spiritual significance, and they are definitely very atmospheric sites today.”
Frances Fernandes, chairing the hearing, confirmed that the examining body would visit the sites on an unaccompanied basis. She asked Kerruish to send through the absolute location in the post-hearing summary “so we ensure we see it.”
