A petitioner at this years’ Tynwald ceremony wants to see a law introduced where a Government overspend triggers a formal investigation.
Simon Mann, who stood unsuccessfully at the 2021 general election, sights projects such as the Douglas promenade refurbishment and the Liverpool ferry terminal schemes as examples of projects that went massively over budget.
Mann told Manx.News that “we need a stronger legislative system in place that at a certain point, an overspend triggers an investigation as to fraud, misrepresentation, professional negligence and many other commercial irregularities to find out basically where the taxpayers money has gone”.
The petition calls for new legislation to be introduced to make it compulsory for an investigation.

Mann said that currently Tynwald Members only have limited parliamentary time to ask questions and some of the answers may be commercially sensitive; so if the law does that for them, it will allow a lot more time for proper scrutiny.
In highlighting some of the schemes that went over budget, Mann said “that kind of colossal waste of public money; it must deserve some real proper scrutiny”.
