Enterprise Minister Tim Johnston will address comments made earlier this year about the occupancy rate in Manx hotels.
Mr Johnston drew criticism from the sector after comments in the July sitting of Tynwald.
At the final sitting before Tynwald’s three month summer recess, Mr Johnston said, during the Biosphere Levy debate, that the island’s hotels “are full all season. That’s why we’re building more. That’s why we have more hotels in planning.”
After this was challenged by hoteliers and MHKs, Mr Johnston “was an overstatement and not accurate”.
He added: “Whilst it was not my intention to do so, I accept that my words have caused concern with some businesses, and have taken the opportunity to apologise to those who contacted me directly, and for that apology to be conveyed to other hotel businesses at a scheduled meeting last week.
“I will also take the opportunity to correct and clarify my comments directly to Tynwald Members.”
Occupancy
Figures later released by the DfE showed a notable decline in occupancy rates for serviced accommodation in 2024 compared to previous years.
This came with the caution that the figures “should be interpreted with caution as they may not fully reflect broader trends across the sector,” due to the voluntary nature of the survey and small sample sizes.
He will make his statement at the October sitting of Tynwald.
