A petition has been launched urging planners to approve a proposed equine surgical and medical facility on the Ballamodha straight.
It follows the death of a horse whose owner says potentially life-saving treatment was unavailable on the island.
The petitioner, Frazer Houston, recently lost his horse to a displaced cecum, said the animal could not access the surgery it needed and had to be euthanised.
Preventable Tragedy
He described the experience as a “preventable tragedy”, noting that gas colic surgery typically has a high success rate when performed promptly.
The petition argues that the Isle of Man lacks essential equestrian surgical and diagnostic facilities, leaving owners facing difficult decisions and long off‑island journeys for emergency care.
Supporters say the proposed site would allow horses to receive timely treatment and bring the island in line with standards seen in the UK and other islands.
The campaign also claims the development could support the wider equestrian sector by improving welfare, attracting events and strengthening the local economy.
The petition calls on the relevant authorities to approve the planning application, saying improved facilities would prevent other owners from facing similar situations.
